🎂 Something special for Bruce's birthday...

Hey Reader!

Chances are pretty high you've heard me share something like this before--

I was a casual fan until a fateful night in 2007, when I had an epiphany about leadership that shook my world--and shaped the way I have led since then in every way. (in addition to inspiring an expensive-but-worth-it-in-every-way hobby of seeing Bruce as many times as I can--29 shows in 14 states since then #worthit)

A few years ago, we put Bruce's birthday on the family calendar to remind us all to be extra grateful for the fact we walk the Earth the same time as Bruce Springsteen...

And the last few years we've made a cake or cupcakes--this year's are homemade carrot cake with cream cheese!

But for several years now I've been thinking about doing something...

two years ago, I saw Bruce at Sea.Hear.Now in New Jersey and said out loud "I'm gonna do this"...

in May, I took a class to learn how to do this...

but the time never seemed exactly right.

But today, on Bruce's 77th birthday, I'm happy to make it official...

I've started Born to Lead, a Substack inspired by Bruce for education leaders who want to navigate the paradoxes they face with confidence—sharing hard-won wisdom about what actually works.

There's a little Bruce flavoring in there (and the header font is his handwriting! Sadly from a file, not from a real-life encounter...) but this free Substack is for leaders who want to lead more effectively--

who want to lead their teams like Bruce leads his: with heart, high expectations and a whole lot of joy.

More on what it's about is here: I'll publish a new article every Tuesday.

When it's extra relevant to leading through layers, I'll mention it here, but to make sure you don't miss anything, you can subscribe on Substack.

It's totally free--at some point I might add a paid tier with templates and resources, but for right now I'm just having a blast taking the leadership lessons of The Boss and breaking them down for the hard working leaders I serve.

Check it out and let me know what you think--I'd love to hear!

I read and respond to every email--and am taking requests for the Substack. (couldn't resist the corny musical allusion 😉)

Take care,

Beth

ps. Bruce called his song and his album Born to Run partly because of a feeling in his soul about escaping a small town, about honoring a part of him that he felt inside him... which is something I find many leaders feel, a deeper calling to do something bigger. Hence, it's called Born to Lead (for the record I firmly believe great leaders are made, not born! More to come on that)

Hey Reader, Somehow it's already October 1 👀 which means life is busy. (or am I the only one sending babysitter voice notes about the 4 overlapping games this Saturday morning?) Which brings me to my first thing: This solo mom has a sitter coming this weekend because I am headed to Vegas for the Teach For America 35th Anniversary Summit! If you're going to be there, hit reply and let me know or text me at 312-373-0315. Would love to meet up IRL! The second thing is... I published an essay on...

Dear Reader, A few weeks ago I went to the grand opening of the new building for the school I founded, which opened in 2013 with 113 fourth and fifth graders. When the first class graduated from 12th grade in 2021, I graduated as well, starting my small business working to help PK-12 school leaders navigate organizational shifts and transitions, ensuring their teams are aligned and effective so their students thrive. I’ve been in touch but I tried to give my amazing successor some space: when...

Books on white shelves and a wooden table in a bright bookstore

I’ve been a big reading nerd since I was in single digits —and as I packed for the end-of-summer trip , I brought so many books I got from recommendation lists— so many my oldest complained (rightfully 🤣) about how much weight my books added to the suitcase. It inspired me to share the love and write a similar book recommendation list for you: I'd love to hear if you've read any of these, what you thought, and what you'd add to the list! The Correspondent: my best friend heard about this and...
